Provence: The Grand Tour:
April 27-May 6, 2024
By the 18th century, the Grand Tour was an important rite of passage for young English aristocrats who traveled with a tutor to major cities in France and Italywhere theyconcentrated on learning about the classics with visits to Roman ruins, read Latin texts, studied the works of major artists in museums and galleries and sought out contemporary artists in their studios. To cap off their tours, they brought back souvenirsto demonstrate to others the extent of their travels. The Grand Tour goal of learning about different cultures through travel continues to this day.
Edventures has designed a Grand Tour of Provence with many elements of the traditional Grand Tour.
Tour highlights include:
We begin in Nice, the Riviera’s main point of entrance. A day trip brings us to the famous Rothschild Villa and Gardensand on to Eze with its gardens, winding cobblestone streets and traditional stone houses.
The tour continues to Avignon, one of France’s loveliest cities and the site of soaring World Heritage Site, the Palace of the Popes. Both Nimes and Arles feature Roman amphitheaters that astound.
Did only the wild west have cowboys? No, we will have lunch with the cowboys of the Camargue, who manage the white horses of this vast, harsh landscape.
In Arles and Aix-en-Provence we will become familiar with the artists Van Gogh and Cezanne. A visit to Marseille’s newly enhanced port and a cruise in Cassis to view the region’s famous limestone rock formations round out the tour.
